October 1 - 31, 2015 Settling in and catching my breath

October 1 - 31, 2015 Settling in and catching my breath. Also a month of Joy & Sorrow interwoven.
All homegrown and fresh picked. Doesn't get any better than this!

What a whirlwind these last several months have been. Now time to stop 'smettere'... it is enough 'basta' for now! I will continue to gradually do things, and especially, I need to purchase some beds, but the bulk of the 'remodel' is done and time to breath and enjoy!

Thursday, October 1st
Finally! the plumbers came to fix the leak in the small bathroom off the kitchen. Now that the leak is fixed, I will have to wait for it to dry out before I can paint and finish cleaning. I already posted these photos in last months blog along with all the other house photos, so will not post them again.

Friday, October 2nd
Had a message from Damiano yesterday, so he came over this morning to pick up his final things, and also get a look at all the new paint. We had a great visit while he was here.

Then in the early afternoon, Freda and Esther messaged they could come over, so they came and spent the afternoon and evening. We had dinner, then they returned home getting back about 10pm. We had a lovely time together, looking at USA pictures and just visiting. Lovely day!

Saturday, October 3rd
Today is my oldest brother, Steve's, birthday so I had to give him a call. We spent a considerable amount of time on the phone. It had been a very long while since we'd last talked, so we had lots to say! Was great to have a visit.

Sent an email to Lalla about installing some curtain rods in the living room. When the outside shutter is rolled up to allow light into the room, I have no window coverings, so I feel a bit like I'm on display. Granted, not too many windows across the street from me, and not sure any would really care to peer over here, but just the same, I would like more privacy, so I want to hang some simple curtains over these two windows. Lalla said she certainly understood and agreed they were necessary. I had spoken to Damiano yesterday about borrowing his drill to install them. He agreed that I could, however, he then gave me this funny look and said he couldn't help me with it though, as he didn't know how to run it. It was new and still in the box at his office. I said, "don't worry, I know how". Oh my, there are so many times I just shake my head here, at the difference in our skills and basic knowledge of what we call 'just everyday living' in the USA. Now true, I may be the exception for women, but I am talking about the men!

Anyway, I still haven't gotten out to purchase any rods or curtains. Have been hoping to make another trip out to IKEA, however, again, I would need someone to pick me up, as they would not allow me to bring 6 foot poles on the train ☺I could get collapsible rods, but because of the height of the windows, the curtains, even simple ones will be a little heavy, and since they will just be slider curtains with no draw cords, etc., the constant tugging will need something very sturdy.

My biggest concern about putting the curtain rods up is that I really need a taller ladder to safely do it. I will need to be on the top of the ladder just to reach to drill the holes and it is not the best built ladder I've ever used. Now that I've waxed the floors, I've noticed it tends to want to do the splits and it doesn't have any cross ties to keep that from happening if the one tiny strip of wood that is currently the only thing keeping that from happening, were to give way. Because of this situation, I will make sure someone is here when I ever get around to doing this, or perhaps I'll call Niko and he would be willing to come help me or even do it for me... that sounds like a plan!

Sunday, October 4th, Mensile
This was the first Sunday that I have not stayed with Caputo's for lunch. Cristina was in bed today, down with her back which is really hurting her a lot now that she is in her 8th month. Her sister Alexandra and Panos were here from Naples also. Mariella was expecting me to stay for lunch, however, she seemed a little stressed and I could tell she really needed some rest, so I just caught the bus back to my apartment, had a bite to eat and a lovely nap, then returned to Caputo's about 4:30.

After church, Luigi and Marco had spent a few hours at the hospital with Nicola, so they had a very late lunch, but were back at the home by the time I arrived at 4:30. Liliana and her cousin were there by then also, so we all sat around and had a nice visit before going to Mafalda's at 6pm. Mariella usually goes to the hospital at 5pm to sit with Nicola. Luigi brought Freda, Esther and me back into Bari to our homes.

Monday, October 5th
Time to paint the little bathroom today, finish cleaning it and put on the new toilet seat. Also did more cleaning around the joint here. It is coming together nicely!

Tuesday, October 6th
Off to the shops and the Poste to mail some letters and cards to the US.   €2.20 just to mail a postcard!

They have waste baskets here in Italy, but very few people use them. I just can't seem to understand it, but almost everyone just throws their trash on the floor, ground etc. And they don't try to pretend like they aren't... they just do it constantly and since everyone does it, no one even seems to notice... well except me. I was sitting on the bus waiting to leave the station and standing right in front of the bus, a man tossed his empty cigarette package. We all saw it, but no one seemed to even care. It is a huge problem here and really makes for very trashy looking roads and highways. The city streets get swept everyday, however, not so along their roads and highways. Really does look like a third world country in many areas.

Now that the house is finished with the painting, I can spend more time walking around town trying to locate specific shops to buy the necessary things to repair my apartment, like outlet covers, door locks, brackets, vent covers, curtains, etc. Also some storage containers, etc.

I have been looking for replacement latches for the sliding glass doors in the laundry/porch area since those are broken, however, I have looked in shop after shop after shop and no luck. Today, I decided to take the bus and go to Via Napoli to an electrical shop to look for outlet covers, which I have also been looking in shop after shop trying to find and haven't been having any luck. Anyway, I wasn't exactly sure where this shop was on Via Napoli, so I got off the bus in the general vicinity and started walking. As I was walking along, I saw a Ferramenta and decided I would check there for the door locks. Thank goodness I had brought them with me. Anyway, I went in and sure enough, they had them!! Yeah! also, they had the blue cabinet paint I had been looking for and another small part I have been needing. My lucky day!

Then I continued on down the street to the Electrical shop, however, the man I needed to speak with wasn't in, so the kid had me leave my cover and said they would call me. The next day they did, but did not have those particular covers and said they were out of production.

While I was out and about, Liliana called and said she and Mariella were near my home and would stop by. Since I was only a few blocks from home by then, and had nearly finished my shopping, they waited for me to arrive. That was really nice to have them stop by.

There is a Parquet shop just across the street from my apartment, so while they were here, I asked Liliana if she would go with me for translation purposes, since I had some questions about the flooring in my apartment. We do not appreciate just how easy things are to acquire and repair in the USA, until you have lived somewhere that it is not. Everything here seems to be a big deal, where as in America, it wouldn't even be important enough to mention... would just be business / living as usual.

Wednesday, October 7th
Well, I made some BIG plans today! Lots of Internet time and phone calls, and I will soon be on my way to USA! A little over a month ago, I found a round trip ticket from Bari to Durango for an exceptional price, just $1000. A remarkably low price, since usually getting to small town Durango from Denver, can be a quarter of this cost itself! I was thrilled, even though, I had only been 'thinking' I might like to go, it wasn't until I found this price, that made the determination for me! So in addition to all my painting and house repairs, my mind as also been busy with planning, and making lists of USA things. I will have a very long flight and a few plane changes, and as one of the changes will be in Chicago, and will be an overnight there, my brother and wife will come and meet me for the evening. My original plan of course was then to catch my very early morning flight after that, and be on my way to Durango.

Well, let me explain where my mind had gone, as I was painting and preparing my new apartment here. I had in storage in Moses Lake a few things, that I kept for when / if I returned to the USA so I could have at least a little furniture for a one bedroom apartment. Not a lot of things, but a couple chairs, my bed, etc. Also, all my photo albums, a few dishes and pans. There are a couple other larger items I had been unable to sell when I moved originally, so those also are in storage. Anyway, the more I thought about them, the more I wanted to pursue what it would cost to ship my bed, sofa, chairs and a few other things to Italy. So the phone calls started. Well, as it turns out, it would not be cost effective to ship those thing here, however, there have been many times I wish I could have gotten into my storage and had someone send me a few things. Since my storage is in a sealed container in a huge warehouse and not easily accessible, I was never able to have anyone access it. Also, it is in Moses Lake. Now, even though I would love to see everyone in Moses Lake again, it is not the most likely place I will go to on my trips back to the USA, since none of my children live there or even close to there. Because of this, I realized the best thing for me to do is move my things into a more accessible storage type unit, and then also into a city where I most likely will be.

So with all that in mind, Carissa found a unit there in Durango. After a few phone calls and Carissa doing the physical work to secure that unit, I then altered my flight plans. Instead of catching the plane in Chicago to Durango, I purchased a ticket from Chicago to Pasco (another great price I might add!). When I originally booked my trip to USA, I never thought I would get to see my Washington family at all, yet interesting how all these things worked out. Now I will get an overnight there, will get to see my two brothers and families and as a bonus even a Chiro adjustment from my brother!  Not only that, the flight that leaves Chicago to Pasco gives me another 12 hours to spend with my other brother in Chicago. I am so happy to get to see this much of my family while I am there. So as you can see there were just a few phone calls happening and much Internetting.... another new word?? Not sure, but if it isn't it should be a word because it certainly fits here!

I won't have a lot of time with them, however, will be so nice to even see them at all, since it was not something I originally thought was going to be possible! Next day, I reserved a 20 foot U-haul, which I will then load all my things from the Moses Lake storage and drive them myself to Durango. I had inquired with the moving company where my things are stored, about them moving my things to Durango, however, they wanted almost more than the value of everything I have in storage! I couldn't believe it! If it cost this much to ship just to Durango, you can imagine how much they wanted to ship overseas....

Now, I won't have much time in Moses Lake, as I will need to head toward Durango almost as soon as I get loaded, because I have limited days to get to Durango, it will be a very long drive, and I am sure hoping the weather will be cooperative... as in NO snow! That would not be to my liking! I hope to be able to visit at least one or two people while there in Moses Lake, but probably only if they can meet me at the moving company storage facility. Sure would loved to have had at least a day there like a Sunday, so I could have seen many at one location (church ☺ ) I was able to have a very brief phone call to Moses Lake friends, albeit very poor connection, so wasn't able to chat for long, but did find out something that helped me to understand how I actually felt motivated to even go to Moses Lake. This was never in my original thinking or plans. Strange and wondrous how these things happen. Anyway, as we all know... the best laid plans are always subject to change.☺

If all goes well, and no hitches, I will be with my daughter for Thanksgiving! Really, really looking forward to this! Of all the things I have missed here in Italy, last year, Thanksgiving was the one that really tugged at me. Even though I missed the Turkey and all the 'fixins' what I missed most was the family being together time. Thanksgiving for us Americans is probably more important for family being together than any other holiday, including Christmas.

Now with this schedule being plenty tight, I have to make a list of all the things I need to do in each place, so I don't forget something along the way. All of this is my plan for now, and we will see what actually happens ☺

Thursday, October 8th
Up early and caught the bus to go pick up my outlet cover that I had left a couple days ago over on Via Napoli. Of course, now they wanted to sell me all new switches, plates and covers, since I needed about 20 of these and they were no longer available. I wasn't ready to give up yet on finding some... more about this later.

I caught the bus over there, then caught it back to near where the Questura is.

Yeah! Time to go to the Questura and pick up my new Permesso. That was considerably quicker than last year! I was going to have Alfonso, Liliana's friend who works there, meet me in case there was anything I wouldn't understand and would need help with, however, I arrived and he didn't, and all went well. I was in and out of there in just a few minutes with my new card. I immediately walked across the street to the City Hall with my new Permesso, so I could apply for my Residency Permit, however, they were closed. I will have to do it another day. Preferably a day when Liliana can go with me. ☺

Freda and Esther had invited me for lunch earlier in the day, but I wasn't sure when I would be finished with the Questura, so said I would call them. As it turned out, I was out of there very early, so caught yet another bus and headed in their direction. Only had to walk a couple blocks. Had a lovely lunch and visit, then left their place about 3pm. Had a few more shops I needed to check into, then arrived back at my joint.

Friday, October 9th
It rained all day, so spent a good portion of the day on the computer looking for outlet covers, and other parts that I have not been able to find any place else. Sure enough, I found the outlet covers on eBay, however, they were €9.00 each! Crazy!  So I kept searching, finally finding plastic replacements for €2.00 each. Much more acceptable! Now I have ordered those and hopefully they will arrive soon.

Also, made a phone call to Dale & Cindy, however, they were in their vehicle and the connection was very poor, so we only were able to talk very briefly, however, it was very timely and all the important things got said ☺

Did a bit of organizing in my laundry room with the storage bins I had purchased. Nice to have all that orderly and more accessible.

Only stepped outside briefly to go across the street and purchase batteries for my mouse. He had quit squeaking... ☺

Saturday, October 10th
More rain and more predicted.

My usual Saturday routine, stop the project cleaning, clean up the house, do a bit of cooking, study, sometimes some laundry, however, not this day because of the rain I couldn't hang them out to dry, make a trip to the market down the street, take a nap...

Sunday, October 11th
Was still raining when I got up this morning, so I sent Luigi a message for a ride, however, he was not available this morning. Turned out okay anyway, as I had plenty of time and caught both buses this morning, arriving at Caputo's where Marco picked me up at the stop. By then, however, the rain and about completely stopped, so could have walked with no problem.

Davide Butterworth came to Bari for the weekend to see Nicola and we sure appreciated having him here. We sang Italian hymn 216 this morning in Church as a request of Nicola's, since he is still in hospital. I'll have to admit, it was very difficult for me to sing... very touching and tender meeting today. From the minute I had walked into their house today, I was feeling the absence of Nicola more than usual.

After church, before lunch, Marco, Davide and I went to the hospital to visit with Nicola. They had started treatments last week and he has had 4 radiation treatments for the tumor they found at the base of his skull. They have determined it is inoperable, and although the radiation will not shrink or remove it, they are hoping to slow the growth of it. Next week, they will determine whether to also start a course of Chemo. The treatments have been a bit harsh and we are seeing the effects of them. Also, he is struggling to eat and drink, so they are giving intravenous to assist with this.

Mariella had prepared a lovely dinner back at the house, then we spent the afternoon visiting with other family that came, before going to Mafalda's at 6pm. Luigi had stopped by before lunch and chatted briefly with Davide before we headed to the hospital, however didn't see him again this day.
Massimo was at Mafalda's today, as he now has a car! Happy for him! He has been without a car for some time, and unlike where I live, he doesn't have easy access to buses, trains, etc., and it is more necessary for him to have a car. Marco brought me home this evening, which I really appreciated.

Monday, October 12th
Up and at it this morning. Nice day to do my laundry and get it all hung out while the weather is sunny. We have been getting a few days of rain, so nice to have this lovely sunny day!

Now, the rest of the day I spent working on my August blog. I got so far behind in blogging with all the moving, traveling, lack of Internet and painting of the apartment, so now time to catch up.

Tuesday, October 13th
Another day spent blogging, but finally got August finished and posted. Yeah! Feels good to get that done before I forget everything!

Hadn't eaten much these last two days, as just sitting and being on the computer, I don't get real hungry, however, Mariella had sent a small bag of fresh plums from their tree, home with me on Sunday and I have certainly enjoyed eating those. There is nothing like tree ripe fruit. Excellent flavor!  She also sent with me some olives they had picked from their trees and prepared. Oh they are good!

Wednesday, October 14th
Had a great rest last night, woke up early, which is good since today is bible study, and it takes me all day to get ready it seems. Also, I have to leave early in the afternoon to catch the bus, and since it is raining again today, this means I will have to leave even earlier. Our bible study this evening is Esther 6 and  7.

Along with the rain earlier, now the wind is very blustery today, so got a bit wind blown walking too and from the bus going to Caputo's tonight. Marco and Mariella were both at the hospital with Nicola, so was a very small group, also, we stayed upstairs so Cristina and the children wouldn't have to come down. Everyday becomes more and more difficult for her with the baby really growing in this final month. It was a bit of a struggle for Daniele to climb up the stairs tonight, however, but Marco had brought him and helped him up before he headed for the hospital. Then Mafalda took him home, and Freda, Esther and I raced to catch the bus. We made it just perfect timing. I have been taking the bus many times returning from Caputo's, but recently Freda and Esther have been coming with me. Really nice to have the company... we yammer most of the way back into town. ☺

Saw something interesting tonight while on the bus... a man was trying to get to the bus stop to catch the bus, however, he knew he wouldn't make it in time to get in front of the bus to flag it from the bus stop, so he ran along the side of our bus down the middle of the street, as the bus was slowing down for the stop light. Then he ran to the front of the bus along side the driver to tell him to stop at the bus stop which was just up the block, then he raced off toward the bus stop.  Too funny!  Bus drivers will not stop and let on or off anyone, except at the bus stops. Also, when you are on the bus, you have to make sure you push the next stop button BEFORE you get too close to the next stop, or they will not stop, of course, unless someone at the bus stop also flags them. I've seen this happen several times and people get very vocal when it happens!

Anyway, after I got off the bus at my stop, I stopped in at the grocery store and picked up a few things. I was down to zero in my fridge!

I don't have my mail delivered to my apartment, since it would mean so many address changes each time I had to move, so decided, I would just get my mail at the Caputo's. This has worked very well, in addition, when I have packages delivered, there is almost always someone home there to receive them. With all my traveling, there are times it would be difficult for me to get my packages otherwise.

Today, I received an email saying one of my packages couldn't be delivered because it was an incorrect address. It was in fact correct, and was Caputo's address, nothing had changed. I think they didn't realize that Via Napoli actually isn't just in town, but actually extends out and runs parallel with SS16 Highway. Anyway, I replied to them, gave them Cristina's phone number to contact if they needed help finding the place. They are suppose to deliver it on Friday.

Thursday, October 15th
Happy Birthday Dean!  My grandson's 12th birthday today. How they are growing up so quickly.

All day I've been blogging on my September blog. Hopefully get caught back up here and not get behind again... I really don't like playing catchup!

Spoke to Marco this morning, and they will not do any more treatments for his father, and they are wanting to send him home tomorrow. He will however, still have to have IV assistance, since he is still not eating or drinking enough.

I made a wonderful yummy salad today, however after eating, I felt so tired that I took a two and half hour nap, but then I wasn't tired when I should have been going to bed this night and ended up staying up way too late! Not good, since tomorrow...

Friday, October 16th
I have a dishwasher here in my new apartment, however, it was sitting on the porch, so I had Marco contact a plumber for me so I could hook it up in the kitchen. It is still portable, and can easily be moved back to the porch if anyone wants it there, however, for me I will actually use it, especially if it is in the kitchen! Anyway, the plumbers were coming this morning at 8:30. Now, since I usually wake before 8:30, I was very surprised when the Building doorbell rang and woke me up and it was already 8:30, so I was scrambling!  I managed to get dressed before they got all their things up the 66 steps and actually arrived at my door, but I was certainly stepping lively!!

Always something else to find that needs to be fixed though... When they pulled out the oven to run the line behind it along the wall, the platform the oven was sitting on is made of wood and has a very serious burned area. The wood is totally black and charred. I think probably, because it is sitting directly on the wood, and there is no place for the heat to dissipate, however, now I need to figure out what to do about it before I use the oven again. So much for finally having an oven!!  Perhaps I will just cut a big hole in the center, where the oven is actually touching the wood and leave the outside frame intact for the support the oven needs. It amazes me and befuddles me just how things are designed and done here in Italy. On one hand they build things to last for centuries, then on the other, they do something so strange, like this. They don't use much wood here, so perhaps they don't even think about it burning... just about everything here is made of tile, granite, marble or stone.

After the plumbers were done, I had to step down the street to the corner and get some cash to pay them. Almost everything is done in cash here.... I don't think I need to explain the 'why' of this!!!!

Nice young men, but like so many of the people here, they are all wanting to go to America, and can't understand what in the world I am doing here in Italy! Especially, since I don't really speak the language. I am able to communicate enough to get things done, like this project, however, not able to carry on a very long or decent conversation ☺

After they left, I cleaned up the mess, then made a batch of Muesli. Cleaned the rest of the house, then sat down and continued with my blogging. Really want to get September's done now, so I will be caught back up.

The hospital was intending to send Nicola home today, however, he is too ill. Instead, they will transfer him to another facility for terminal care. No words to express how sad my heart is about all this.

Saturday, October 17th
I had something happen yesterday that I've never before had happen in my entire life.... unless I have forgotten it, just like I forgot Friday yesterday.  Here is what happened:

I had received a call the day before that the plumber was coming at 8:30, but because I had stayed up late working on my blog, and didn't rest well during the night, I didn't wake up until the bell rang. I scrambled up, they came and did their work, I cleaned up the mess. Then I cleaned up the house, because in my mind it was Saturday, my cleaning day. Even made a batch of Muesli. In my mind, I was thinking great, now I am ready for Sunday. Earlier in the day, I had received a message from Freda that we were invited to Tonia's for lunch on Sunday. I replied, see you tomorrow. She never commented back, until later in the evening when  I received another message from Freda saying they might come over 'tomorrow' afternoon, That did confuse me a bit, since in my mind it would be Sunday and we would all be going to Tonia's for lunch, then Gospel Mtg., so I sent her back a note saying, "you mean in the evening?" None of this however triggered me that today was really Friday.

I had received a few phone calls from Marco also this morning, regarding the plumber, and the thought briefly flashed through my mind, 'he is calling from his work', but right on the heels of that thought, I said in my mind, no he isn't working today, it is Saturday, that is why he keeps calling so much.

Also, in the afternoon, I sent a message to Cristina asking if my package had arrived 'yesterday'. She wrote back, "no, no, not suppose to come until today". Still I never connected what day it was, even though I knew it was suppose to come on the 16th. I was just happily going about my 'Saturday' business and then I sat back down to work on my September blog.

Since in my mind it was already Saturday, I wanted to get my blog finished up and posted, because the next day being Sunday (so I thought), I knew I would be gone all day and wouldn't get to finish it. Didn't want to leave it until Monday, so I pushed on late into the evening working on it. Finally I got it done and posted. Now I got around for bed and thought about sending Luigi a note for a ride, since I knew I would be tired in the morning with going to bed so late, but by now it was after 11pm and I didn't want to disturb him, so thought I would just wait and call him 'Sunday' morning. As I climbed into bed, I set my alarm to get up early for 'Sunday' and it said it was set for 1day and 6hours. What?? That really confused me. I looked at it again, and didn't believe it, so I got back on the computer, and sure enough, everywhere I looked, it said Friday!!! My mind was almost refusing to accept it even then... how could this be?

Never have I had anything happen like this before. Yes, I have for short periods gotten up and forgot momentarily what day it is, but never gone an entire, complete day and had many things happen that could have triggered me to realize what day it was, yet I went ALL day from morning until I climbed into bed, thinking it was Saturday. I had even had to write the date yesterday, and sure enough, I had written Saturday, Oct. 16th!

Now this morning, the REAL Saturday, Oct. 17th!, I called Freda and Esther and sent Cristina a message explaining why my messages were so confusing to them yesterday! We have all had a good laugh about this, but my head is a bit freaked about it!!!! Am I getting 'old timers disease"?  The word in Italian for "Forget" is dimenticare. Or "I Forgot" is dimenticato. Now those Italian words have the same Latin root as our English word Dementia. When it is pronounced they sound almost the same too!!!

Granted, I live alone, don't really have any reason to check the days/dates, and all week, I have been 'reliving' and recalling all of August and September by working on my blog for those months, but still.... freaky!!! With all the data and details running around in my head, perhaps it's no wonder my brain short circuited!

So now I will write things I did today....the REAL Saturday!

Slept in for one thing. After realizing it was only Friday, I shut off the alarm, went to bed and didn't wake up until 9:45 this morning. Had a great sleep! Now, since I have a 'Free' day, I will walk downtown and take my FastWeb bill to see if I can sort it out. I had received my first bill and it is over €50 for only two weeks! and is suppose to be only €20 per month! Anyway, I will get that sorted out, so for now, I'm off of here and will write more tonight about how all this turns out today, Saturday... the real Saturday ☺ hee hee

3pm and I am back at the house. No problem at FastWeb, just a bit of a wait, as there was a man ahead of me. Then there were two who came in after me, and as the first man was finishing up, they bellied up to the counter, trying to get ahead of me, however, I just did the same thing, and the clerk knew I had been there before the other two men, so I think he sensed I would probably not keep quiet if he helped them first, so, he only looked their direction, then turned and helped me. Good thing too... I am learning the Italian ways!! ☺

After I finished my transaction there, I wanted to go see if I could find a store I had been in a couple weeks ago. I did not remember the name of the shop or the name of the street, just the general vicinity. However, I never did locate it. It could be, since by this time of the day, most of the shops were shut up and wouldn't open again until around 4 or 5 o'clock, that I may have just not recognized it. When that happens, it is very hard to recognize one 'garage door' from another! and there are hundreds, and that is assuming I was even on the correct street or block! I try to take pictures of shops I want to revisit and also a picture of the street name, however, the day I was there, I did not think I would be returning. I had seen a wall picture there, that I really liked, but at that time, I had a different location in mind and that picture would not work there. After, getting painting done and furniture into position, I realized I really would like to have the picture and had just the place for it. Now, I will have to try again and locate the shop, but not again today. Another day.

Just a photo of one of the many shops here in Bari. Almost all the shops are geared to specific things, like this one for baby and young children's clothes. There are dozens of children's shops here.

Purchased a few groceries on my way home. Now, doing a few things like emails, studying and just general things. Feels wonderful today, to have a little leisure! Didn't clean anything today!! Had done my usual Saturday cleaning yesterday... hmmmmm.... wonder why! so decided today would just be a free day!

This shop is Numeri Primi, one of my favorite markets, where I can get some organic things.

Made a wonderful big salad with some roasted chicken pieces along with some fresh whole grain bread for my late lunch, early supper. Oh, it was sooo good.

While I was walking back today, I came up behind three Italian ladies walking along, however, they weren't from Bari, because as I started to step around them, one of the ladies stepped up beside me and asked me which way to the sea. They wanted to eat at a restaurant near the sea. Nothing unusual about that right.... well for me, it was a Moment!! I am certainly not Italian, do not look like an Italian... and most people would have for sure pegged me as a 'tourist', yet here were Italians asking me for directions!! and in Italian!! Looovvveeedd it! Made me feel like perhaps, I can eventually really call this my 'home'! In addition, I was able to show them where the sea actually was! They were just walking parallel to it about three blocks in. When we came to the next block I showed them and you could actually see it from there. Also mentioned Bari Vecchio would be a better place to find food at this time of day. Wow, I felt so important!

Did a spot of laundry, dishes, wrote in my blog and now, it is time to pack it in for the day. Will be up early tomorrow and off to Church. Lunch plans with the Sgaramella's tomorrow, along with Freda, and Esther. Will not be home all day as usual, so will blog again on Monday. Buonanotte tutti.

Sunday, October 18th
Had a wonderful day and wonderful food with Sgaramella's. Yummy Fish baked in rock salt and seafood pasta.
 Giacinto cutting the melon
Freda & Esther setting the table
Me taking food pictures... Seafood pasta
 Fresh roasted chestnuts
Fresh oranges and fresh olives from Nicola's trees
 The thimble cups of coffee
and the beautiful fresh picked pomegranates Giacinto sent home with each of us.
The Condo where Tonia and Giacinto live

Then in the evening we all went to Mafalda's, also there was Massimo, Franco, Daniele, Luigi, Carlo, Nicola Stasi, Giacinto & Tonia, myself, Freda, Esther and Mafalda. None of the Caputos' were there... they were with Nicola in hospital and things are progressively getting worse. I fear the end is near for him. He is ready to go 'home' he says. Sgaramella's gave me a ride home this evening.

I have been watching thetruthaboutcancer.com the docu-series, so every evening, I watch the next in the series. There are nine parts. Much of the info I was aware of, as this has been my interest for several years now, but nice to review it all, and so many new things I have learned. Highly recommend everyone watch this series. *See post at bottom of this blog.

Monday, October 19th
Great rest last evening. No big plans for today, however, have been doing some extra bible studies recently about the return of Christ. Very very interesting to see all the prophecies that have been fulfilled already, even in my lifetime. Mark 13:35 "Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:"

Living here in Europe, has made me even more aware of all these things. Has been very good for me to see and experience these things first hand. To be where much of the bible took place.

Also the old saying, "you can't see the forest for the trees", is so true in how Europe and the people here view and see America. Sometimes, when we are too close to a situation we need to step back and get a little perspective. When we do we notice there is a whole forest we couldn't see before because we are too close, and focusing on the trees. Focusing on our little area, our daily routines, and not seeing the big picture. My studies have made me very aware of the USA and things that so many Americans are either not aware of or are choosing to ignore. Very serious.

Around noon today, decided I better go to the Verdura and get a few vegetables. Daily shopping or near daily shopping is great... at least things are about a fresh as I can get without having my own garden.

In the late afternoon Freda and Esther came over. We have each been watching the TTAC series (see bottom), so we watched together today here at my place. What a lovely evening we had. So much to talk about... seems like we never run out of things to discuss.. I prepared a huge salad, chicken with mushrooms, fresh whole grain bread, fruit.
They left around 9pm and then had a half-hour walk back to their bach. It had been a very beautiful sunny day today and the evening was so lovely too, I wanted to go walking with them. Instead, I did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen, then had an early to bed night.

Tuesday, October 20th
A great rest and now up, dressed, having a wonderful bowl of my homemade Muesli. Since it is raining today, I won't be going to the beach like I had planned. Have been working on a study of the Second Coming of Christ, so will just continue doing that today.

The plumber is suppose to come today, as there is something leaking under the sink. It is not a huge leak, but that is when it Needs to be fixed. Not after it has done other damage. ☺ My American thinking... do it now while the problem is small.

I was very busy cooking a few things to take to Caputo's, so was really not the best time to have him show up, however, there is no good time to have a water leak either. Anyway, he repaired it for now, but says it is a very old valve and will need replaced soon.... always something to fix.  After he left, I finished up the cooking, packed it all up and caught the bus to Caputo's.

At 11:12 I had received word that Nicola, was being brought home from the hospital. He will continue his last hours there. A few of us gathered at his bedside and it was at 20:55 today, Nicola finished his race on this earth. Incredibly sad for those of us living, but so glad he is no longer suffering. So thankful he has gone to a better place. A place of peace and rest from this old world and all it's suffering. My heart is so very thankful to have gotten to know him this last year. He was a wonderful man of God, a very dear elder. It was a privilege to get to be at his bedside to the end.

It is the custom here all persons are prepared and viewed at home. There are no funeral homes and no embalming, so it is necessary for them to be home when they pass, to dress and 'arrange' the body quickly. The coffins are refrigerated, and have a glass top for viewing, which is then changed to a wooden one for burial. Nicola's viewing will be tomorrow at the home, and his funeral on Thursday at 11:00 in Modugno. (Got changed to 10:30)

Thank you everyone for the condolences sent through me to the family. I have shared them all and they greatly appreciate them. One in particular, sent from America, really touched my heart and theirs: "Amazing how God’s family makes it so that we can love and shed tears for people we don’t even know. Hugs to you. Glad you can be there to offer support. Words are not near as comforting as just having a silent people close by."

Wednesday, October 21st
Yesterday was a very late evening for me. Arrived home sometime around midnight, and even though I was tired, I couldn't immediately 'let down', so cleaned up my kitchen from all the cooking earlier today, before retiring. Tossed a bit during the night, then managed to rest after daybreak, not getting up until 09:30. Also, I had drank a fair amount of coffee yesterday evening... can't do that anymore and expect to sleep.  Then in the afternoon, I returned to Caputo's.

Six year old granddaughter, Aurora's, drawing of this room
It is beautiful and wonderful, that the children are not afraid of this. They loved their grandpa and will miss him greatly, but they understood to some small degree, that he has gone on to a better 'home', and there will be no more pain or suffering. They seemed to be fascinated by the whole process and perhaps because the atmosphere was tranquil and peaceful, (no loud 'sorrowing'), they were not frightened. They each said their goodbye's in their own way to him. It was so touching.

Many people coming and going at the house today. Esther and Freda there most of the day and Davide, Enrico, Maria Sigismondo and May Chambers all arrived about 7pm. Then at 8pm Those four and Freda and Esther and myself all went to Mafalda's for supper, along with Tonia and Giacinto.

We are very short on cars here in Italy among our friends, and Luigi is in Milano for a dental course, so he wasn't here to give rides. After dinner, since there were more of us than room in Tonia & Giacinto's car, Freda and I were going to take the bus back into town, even though it was getting quite late. Mafalda would have none of it and had me take her car. So I dropped Freda off and then drove on down to my place. As usual, I had to drive around for about fifteen minutes trying to find a parking place, but finally found one about 2 blocks away. Got to practice my parking skills too, as it was a very tiny one, but I did it, and without 'kissing' the other two cars, but I really thought about doing it the Italian way, however, it just felt so wrong to do it, I just couldn't, intentionally bump the other cars. Anyway, with a little maneuvering, I got it in there. Hope it is still there in the morning!  I will leave at 8am and pick up Maria at the sisters bach and Esther and Freda will take the bus. I wish the car were bigger, so we four could fit in it, but it is just too tiny. Davide and Enrico were staying at Mafalda's.

All the beautiful flowers.

Thursday, October 22nd
Nicola's funeral

It has been quite the day.
First, I will start with this morning. As I said, I had to park a ways from the apartment last night, but when I went to get the car this morning, I had to walk directly toward the sea and it was pouring rain and the wind blowing off the sea was so strong, my umbrella immediately flipped inside out. When I opened the car door, it was so strong, that I had to really pull hard to get it closed. Originally, since all four of us will not fit into that small car, I was to pick up Maria Sigismondo at the bach and Freda and Esther were to take the bus, however, I knew that was not going to go so well, for them to get to the bus, so I phoned and picked up both Ester and Maria and delivered them to Caputo's, then came back for Freda. All this took me a little over an hour.  But let me back up here.

The old car.... the clutch was making a very strange noise, the wipers only worked if I held the switch in the up position. The fan did not work, so I was unable to run the defroster. I had to lower the windows a bit to circulate air, but that didn't help much, and then also the rain came in a lot. It is 8am, traffic is in full swing, narrow single lane streets with cars parked on both sides, the streets are very busy with all the school children, people stepping out in front of me with umbrellas over there heads not looking, I am so fogged up, I can barely see out the windshield, so kept wiping it with a cloth, shifting, hitting the wipers for a swipe or two. Oh, my goodness, it was almost comical! I have to say, I think it was the most challenged I have ever been while driving.

Even though Mafalda's car was very old and did not have many advantages... it had one great advantage... it got us where we wanted to go and certainly beat walking in the wind and rain!  Thank you Mafalda!

Then when I dropped Maria and Esther off at Caputo's, there was a major wreck on the highway, so the traffic was backed up to the city. I saw this just in time, so took the exit and the frontage road... one piece of luck! Then on my way back to pick up Freda, right in the middle of all this wiper, shifting, wiping the windshield, and traffic everywhere, David phones me. Oh my, I knew I had to answer it, as he would get very anxious, so with everything else I was trying to do, and needing to make a left turn about then too... well lets just say, "I've still got what it takes to multitask" !!!

Now, I have just picked up Freda, and she has just had a phone call that Carlo needs a ride! He lives in another town!  Carlo was suppose to have the closing prayer at the service. I suggested to Freda, that we discuss it all with Marco when we got there, as there was no way with this old car and so many things not working, that I could pick him up.  Anyway, that all sorted itself out and he had a ride, and Freda and I rode with Marco to Modugno to the funeral and back. Now the funeral...

Because of what I am familiar with in the USA, it seemed like the funerals are very unique here. First of all, they came to the home and picked up the coffin/body in the hearse.

Then there is a little chapel in the cemetery where he was to be buried and where the service was.

They now have removed the glass refrigerator unit and he is open casket in the chapel. Everyone just comes in and mills around, hanging out near the casket. Then there was no reserved seating for the family, and I was surprised how many did not respect the first two rows and allow the family to sit there. Many of the family just stood to the side of the room. The ministers, all six of them stood at the front to the left of the casket. Still in their coats and the women with their purses still hanging from their shoulders. They stood there the whole service. Maria prayed, then we sang the hymn that Nicola had requested two Sundays ago. We had about six small, words only, hymnbooks that were handed to the crowd, and Freda led the congregation in singing.  No piano, no organ, no music. Then Enrico spoke, then David spoke, and Carlo gave the final prayer. Both David and Enrico had very nice things to say and especially about Nicola's testimony and how he lived his life. That concluded the service. No Eulogy. Immediately, everyone just got up and gathered around the casket, and then, within less than five minutes, they carried the wooden cover over and with a power drill, started putting the screws in the top. zzzzpppp, zzzppp.  That 'jarred' me a bit... certainly not used to that. I spoke to others about it later, and they said that is how it affected them when they first came to Italy too, however, they said they are used to it now.

About this time, Tim, Cristina's father, Alexandra her sister and Panos all arrived at the service. Tim had flown to Naples from Greece, then caught the four hour train ride from there to Bari. Alexandra and Panos had picked him up at the train station, then hurried out to Modugno for the funeral. They were just putting the lid on the casket; service was over, when they arrived. Tim wanted to see and say goodbye to Nicola, so they unscrewed it, he looked, then they put it back on. There is no procession, or any formal viewing.  Everyone here was milling around near the casket. The original time for the service was to be at 11am, however due to a conflicting schedule, the time got changed to 10:30.

Now, they put the casket on a roller cart (no pallbearers) and rolled it out to the burial plot, placed it in the ground without any more words being said, and started covering it.

Everyone gathered there in the rain with their umbrellas and watched until it was finished.
Then the pre-formed granite frame that will hold the head and foot stone later, was put on top of it and the flowers and that concluded the service. Everyone left.

While I was at the cemetery, I also went to see Anna's grave. This is Mariella's mother, that I had gotten to know over the course of the last year. She lived with Nicola and Mariella. I was in The Netherlands when she passed away, so was not here for her service. When I returned to Bari, it felt like I never had gotten to say goodbye to her, so wanted to at least visit her grave.

The neighbors of Nicola and Mariella's had been 20 years together there, and had been family to them, so they were preparing the dinner for the family. Mariella was concerned about the ministers and where they would have dinner...as always, thinking of others. What a beautiful person she is. However, this has been very very hard on her. She has held up well, but I am sure when it is all over, it will be very difficult for her.  Also, Marco and Liliana and the rest of the family.

After Marco brought Freda, Esther and I back from the funeral, we three all squeezed into Mafalda's car and I drove us over to her house. Mafalda prepared dinner for the ministers and Giacinto, Tonia and I were included. Tonia always helps Mafalda prepare large meals.

There are no 'potlucks' here in Italy. For one thing, they eat simple, fresh foods, and prepare the pasta, the meat (usually fish) when it is time to eat. Very little is baked, no casseroles, no pre-made salads, (salad is just fresh greens with lemon & olive oil), so not easy to have a potluck. Finger foods, like cheese and fruit possibly, but not much else. Anyway, the concept of a potluck does not exist here. Perhaps also, because they are not snack type people. They eat a big meal that usually lasts from two to four hours, with everyone sitting around the table. And today, it was even longer... the family sitting and visiting and reminiscing.

Anyway, for the rest of us, after a three hour lunch at Mafalda's,
Freda and I walked to the bus stop and caught the bus back into town, since again, the car will only hold five. Giacinto & Tonia will bring the other three sisters to the bach a little later. David and Enrico are headed back to Livorno tonight, and left just before Freda and I. It had stopped raining and was only a drizzle, so I got off the bus early and had a nice long walk back to the apartment. I did however, stay away from the sea, though, as the wind is still pretty brisk and cold blowing off it.

My conclusion of my impressions of this day:
We form our ideas on how things should be or should function, based on what we know from what we have previously experienced or been exposed to, however, I am realizing that can be a trap for formality and form. Simple can be just as effective. To these dear people, who have the responsibility of being there with their loved ones when they depart this life, and having to prepare them for burial, they accept the fact that death is a part of life, much better than the western world. They do what is necessary at the moment. This doesn't mean they don't feel the grief and pain, they just deal with it in a different manner, and in their own private way.

All for now, I am going to take a nap, even though it is five o'clock. Been a long three days.

Friday, October 23rd
Took a long rest last night and got up late this morning.

Did a load of laundry and hung it out to dry, as it was a windy, but sunny day. Great clothes drying weather.

About 3pm Freda and Esther came over and spent the afternoon. They showed me pictures of the 'Fashion Show' they had at the bach last evening. Freda had received a package of clothes in the post a few days before, so Esther, Maria and May had her 'model' them.  From what they told me, it was a very fun evening for them and I got a good chuckle too! Great way for them to relieve the tensions of the week. Had been a long week for them.... Nicola was a very special part of their years here in Italy and was very difficult to say goodbye..

For dinner I made my first chili and cornbread of the season. We ate about 7pm, and all agreed it was very good... not something they ever get here in Italy. Also prepared a spinach salad. Then I roasted chestnuts for the first time in my life! They were very good. Freda and Ester sometime after 9pm and walked the half hour back to their bach. We had a great evening.

Saturday, October 24th
Woke up to a gorgeous sunny day, so time to wash the sheets and do a bit of house clean up, then prepare for church tomorrow. Over all it was a very relaxing day. No big projects. Just a bit of computer work and that was it. Loved the slower pace after such a hectic week.

Sunday, October 25th
Well how does the saying go.... "expect the unexpected"  ..
Last night, Mariella's heart was racing and her blood pressure was 200 over ?? so they took her to the hospital. They gave her some drugs to bring it down, and tomorrow they will run some tests. All being well, she should be home in two or three days. A lot of stress accumulated these last few days and actually the last few years. She had just lost her mother five months ago, and Nicola has not been well for some time, having lots of pains and getting thinner and thinner. She has had continual stress and worry and also, she is not the typical vocal expressive Italian, she tends to hold everything in. Now, her body is being affected by all this. Amazing she was going as strong as she was for as long as she had been dealing with all these things.

The church meeting this morning was very tender. Marco was exceptional.. spoke about God's plan and that God doesn't make mistakes and knows that his father is in a better place now.  We all missed Nicola, but in addition, we now were concerned for Mariella. Also, poor Cristina... ninth month of pregnancy.  Her dad left yesterday, but both her mom and dad will be back next Saturday and plan to stay for five weeks. This is Good!!!

Tim will help Marco with the olive harvest and Tula with Cristina, the children and the new baby. Also, this will help take some of the stress off of Mariella hopefully. Anyway, was so glad Freda and Esther stayed in Bari this weekend and didn't go to Manfredonia, like they were scheduled to.

Freda, Esther and I stayed at Caputo's for dinner... I prepared potatoes, Marco grilled the octopus,

These two things are the octopus sacks that hold the ink. Marco cooked them and then served it over these bread pieces. Even the smell was very strong. I took that little tiny tiny nibble you see on the edge of the plate... whoa, that was enough for me! I have eaten squid ink that was used to make pizza crust, however, it is not as strong tasting as this octopus ink was. Definitely not for me ☺

Cristiano (Liliana's s/o) prepared the seafood pasta.

Cristiano's mother from Sicily and Cristina and Liliana

It all went just as if Nicola and Mariella were there, except they weren't and it felt really odd not to have them sitting at the end of the table where they always sat. He is and will be greatly missed. Freda, Esther and I all rode the same bus to Caputo's this morning. As we get their early, Freda and I swept up all the fallen leaves from the tree that was on the porch steps and in the parking area. Just little things like this that Nicola always had done before. What I missed most, was him standing on the step, hand outstretched with a genuine smile of greeting. I missed him going downstairs and getting the potatoes for me to prepare for lunch. He was a quiet man and didn't say much, and never raised his voice, but his very presence was so sincere and caring. Just writing this, brings tears.

After study at Mafalda's this evening, Tonia and Giacinto brought all of us home, as Marco was at the hospital with his mom. Anyway, poor Freda tonight was weary from this long stress filled day. However, Franco, Mariella's brother was with us tonight, and that cheered us all up a bit.

Monday, October 26th
First thing I did this morning was use the tools I borrowed from Marco yesterday to fix the platform under the oven. I just cut out the portion of the wood that was touching the bottom of the oven where the actual gas flame was. Left the outside framework where the oven could still be supported but away from the heat.  I cut out the area directly underneath the oven, so the heat could dissipate and circulate underneath where it is actually rock floor and also ventilation. This riser sits about 6 inches off the floor, allowing me to do this.

Other things were just my normal routine, a load of laundry, out on the line to dry, off to the market to get a few groceries, then around 3:30 decided to go to IKEA and purchase a few things that I need for the apartment.

Hoofed it over to the train station, then took the train to IKEA. As I shopped along, I realized I would like to buy a few more items, however, no one was available to come pick me up in their car, so I knew I could only purchase what I could carry home on the train. I have two very large IKEA bags and even though, they were not full, the items I purchased were quite heavy. Also, I had purchased two curtain rods, and they didn't fit in the bags, so made it awkward to carry.

Anyway, I rolled my things across the parking lot and down the street to the train station in the IKEA cart, forfeiting my €1.00 that you have to pay for the use of the cart, but get back when you return the cart. It was worth the euro just to be able to use the cart to get my bags to the train. After the train arrived in Bari, I lugged the bags down the 40 steps, the long walk passage under the station, then up the 40 steps to the street, planning to take the #2 bus which would let me off only a block from my home. However, as with all things here in Bari, they don't want you to get dependent on things... there was construction now where the #2 bus stop had been and no markings where or if it was still stopping here. Anyway, I inquired, but no one seemed to know. The cab drivers eager to make a buck, calling out wanting me to take a taxi, however, when I reached in my pocket and showed them all the money I had left on me, €1.16 in coins, they declined ☺☺☺ hee hee.  Then, they made the comment, "oh, it's only a few blocks". However, if I had had money to pay them, they would have been like, "those bags are heavy, you need a taxi!"

I wouldn't have taken a taxi anyway, since it really is only a few blocks and even though the bags were a bit heavy, mostly they were just large and awkward. I will have to say, though, this is the first time I have felt apprehension while out and about carrying my bags along. It was only about 7pm, and lots of people around, but for some reason, with the awkwardness of them, I felt at a disadvantage. I am always on alert, but was even more so this time. Was glad it wasn't so far to walk and arrived home without incident. Perhaps part of the reason for my apprehension, just this last week, Freda and Esther and Maria had all shared their stories of having their bags snatched.

Esther had hers on her back, and as she was walking down the walk path, a bicycle with two guys came along on the path and in the blink of an eye, clipped the strap, grabbed her purse and whisked away. She had just gotten cash to pay her and Maria's boarding room for the night, and now they had no money and no ID. Also, Freda and Maria shared their stories of their own experiences.

Anyway, I am well aware of the possibility of this here, especially after what happened with Cristina's family when I was in the car with them, when I first arrived here in Bari last year, when we stopped at a stop sign and the guy jumped off the motor scooter and jerked open the car door and tired to snatch Cristina's bag right out of her lap (not successful). Since then, I wear all my important documents and most of my money under my clothes in a pocketed T-shirt. I do carry a bag or purse sometimes, or like today, my shopping bags, and wouldn't want to lose any of my things, however, the most important stuff, I keep tucked away.  The saying here is not 'if', but 'when' you get your bag snatched.

Tuesday, October 27th
Weather starting to get a little cooler now, and I noticed when I moved in here, that the doors on the back side of the apartment do not seal very good. The owner had replaced all the front windows and doors with very good and effective ones, however, for some reason, they did not replace the back ones, so today, I purchased some weather stripping. Hopefully, we don't get too much wind this winter, like we did last year, and if we do, hopefully the weather stripping will do the trick.

I then put up a rod over the stove that I had purchased at IKEA on Monday, and unpacked all the rest of the things I had purchased and washed and then put them to use.... containers, hand towels., etc.

Was glad to hear Mariella came home this evening and seems to be doing fine.

Afternoon, I spent on the Internet, shopping.  Ordered a few things to have shipped to my daughter's in the USA, to bring back with me.  Also called and made an appointment with my dentist... really need to get a tooth fixed while I am there.

Looking forward to seeing my Illinois brother, as I have a plane change in Chicago, before continuing on with the rest of my plans there. Don't know who all I will get to see at this time, as winter weather can play a big factor in my traveling there, as well as my plans to move my storage things out of ML to Durango. I know for sure, even if the weather is good, I am going to really be short on time, but if all goes well, I will at least have Thanksgiving with my daughter in Durango!  Yeah, a USA Thanksgiving! Turkey and all. That is the one thing I missed most last year!  Can't wait!  More about all this USA stuff in my November blog, as it happens. ☺

Wednesday, October 28th
During all my 'renewing' of my apartment, one of the things I put off until later, was the re-caulking of the bathtub and kitchen sink.
 Before
After

Also the faucet needed new seals, so I removed it and took the whole part to the hardware store, to make sure I got the correct ones. Found this to be the easiest way here, when it would be hard to describe even if I spoke the language fluently, but is especially hard when I can't.

Before

After
As with all things here, when I was changing the seals on the faucet, I noticed that one of the water hoses connected to it was seriously twisted. Now, I needed to not just fix the rings in the top of the faucet, but had to go under the sink and loosen the nut to fix the water line. After removing this, I now had another problem... the area where the nut that holds the faucet to the sink was, was such a tight fit, that now I needed a special tool to re-tighten it.

After this though, I couldn't do much else. The last few days, I have been having terrible blackout and spinning spells when I would tilt my head back or lay down. When I was working under the sink, it got so bad, I had to stop for the day, so will try to find the tool I need tomorrow.  This day it had just got progressively worse until, all I could do was lie down and feel sick. I had this happen one other time a couple years ago, but did not figure out what it was then, but this time, I felt I needed to find out what was causing it. Here is what I found out:

www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/centers_clinics/vestibular/conditions/benign_paroxysmal_positional_vertigo.html

It described to a Tee exactly what I was experiencing, so I immediately did the exercise it prescribed.

I had wanted to put up the curtain rods I had purchased at IKEA on Monday, however, with all this dizziness and spinning going on, I certainly wasn't about to climb any ladders. As a matter of fact, I am not too keen on using the ladder I have here anyway, as it is really not a very sturdy one and not tall enough either, and by the time I go all the way to the top, it feels very unsafe! For sure, will have to have someone here when I decide to do this project. I sent Niko a note asking what he would charge to come do this for me, however, he wanted more than I paid for all the curtains and the rods! so, that wasn't a solution ☺ So for now, they remain on the coffee table. They don't look bad there... maybe I'll just leave them there...

Was in bed before nine, then woke up before 12:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. Finally fell asleep about 5am, and was able to sleep for about 3 hours. Not happy about this lack of sleep... really needed my rest to get over this head/neck stuff.

Thursday, October 29th
The worst day yet for my spinning head and overall feeling very bad. Did the exercises prescribed again, but I basically did nothing this day but feel terrible.

I did however go to the place where I needed to pay my condominium fee. I had not received a bill for October, and was getting concerned. I had previously received a notice that I needed to read my water meter, however, when I presented the reading to them, they said it was less than the previous reading. Now, I knew that was not true, as this is information that got recorded on my rental contract when I moved in, and two other people had verified it. I took a picture of the meter and sent it to them, yet, when I checked my postal box this morning, they had not made the adjustment.  Also, I had the November condo fee statement, but not he October one. So now, I took this and headed to the office. Again, a limited vocabulary of Italian, however, was able to show them and the necessary adjustments were made. Since I was planning to be gone when the December bill came due I wanted to pay ahead. Anyway, somewhere in all this conversation, the lady only receipted me for Nov. & Dec., so I called her and said I would come back tomorrow, as I still wanted to pay Oct., even though I never received a bill. As I have said before, the simplest of things can become very complicated here!!

Stopped on my way back and picked up some more weather stripping, as I didn't have quite enough to finish the job  the other day, then when I arrived home I finished that small project, then just laid down.

When I went to bed finally this night, I laid and tossed, read some, trying to put myself to sleep, toss, read some more, toss until finally at 3am I just got up without having slept any this night.

Friday, October 30th
Strange thing today, I felt better, even after no sleep last night, so I cleaned up the caulking project in the bathroom, now that it had had time to be all set up. After that and having scrubbed out the tub, a long soak seemed jut the thing I needed. Love having a tub again. It is not jetted, but still felt good just to soak and rest in it.

After that, I got dressed and went back to the condo office and took care of the balance there, then to the hardware store to find the tool I needed to finish my sink project. It was dumping rain by this time, but I actually really enjoy the rain, especially when it is a warm rain, so I happily splashed through the puddles like a child ☺ I had on my waterproof Keens, and it was quite warm out. I actually got to splash several times.  After I arrived at the hardware store, I realized, I didn't have any cash on me, so made a dash across the way to the bank, then returned to the store. Now, the first tool he sold me I took home, but it was not the correct one, so I got to 'splash' back over there and exchange it for the correct one. Anyway, sink project now finished.

More computer time, then off to an early bed tonight. Was definitely feeling tired and hoping for a good sleep tonight...

Saturday, October 31st
and that is exactly what I had. A great rest! Got up feeling fabulous and most of the spinning was gone, so maybe those exercises were working. Anyway, I feel almost 'normal' again... my normal ☺

Did my usual housework, spot of laundry, bit of house cleaning, some baking for tomorrow (Lemon cake to take to Caputo's), my studies, then a long walk on the sea. Overall great day and ready for tomorrow, hoping for another good rest tonight.

I still need to purchase some beds for this joint, especially, since I am having company over the xmas holidays... Anyway, I'll get it figured out. For now, I have a couple air mattresses ☺

Sunday, November 1st through Wednesday, November 4th
This should be in the November blog, however, since it rounds out this blog very nicely, I will include it here. Freda, Esther and I and my Lemon Cake, caught the bus to Caputo's this AM. Wasn't especially looking forward to the rough ride, after just getting over my head/neck problem, but wasn't too bad and I didn't crash the cake either ☺

Great church service today, and again so nice to hear from Marco. Also Mariella, looked tired, but otherwise, seemed to be feeling a little better. Cristina's folks arrived yesterday, so was nice to have them with us today. After church, the normal lunch with the Caputo's, but notice anything different about this photos???...  besides missing Nicola?

NO Marco and Cristina!!!  Just before 10am she started experiencing some labor, about 25 minutes apart, then sat through church, and half of lunch, but didn't eat anything. Then when the frequency went to 15 minutes she and Marco headed to the hospital.  We were all excited!
Even Aurora is so ready to have her new baby brother home. Her and Roberto were 'practicing' ☺
But alas, after being there for about 8 hours, the pains stopped and turned out to be Braxton Hicks (false labor). They sent her home, but hopefully won't be so long now. She of course is ready for it to be now, but that baby will come when IT is ready ☺☺ I can't wait to hold a newborn baby again. It has been a long while ☺and there is just nothing like it as all mothers and grandmothers know! ☺

After lunch, and an afternoon rest, Freda, Esther and I walked over to Mafalda's, then Franco brought us home about 7:30. He actually lives in Modugno, so it was a fair bit out of his way.  We offered to take the bus home, but he insisted and we certainly appreciated it, especially since I had a whole bag full of pans and containers to bring home. I had collected all my things up today, that I had taken out there with food a couple weeks ago, plus the cake pan from today and also a bottle of Olive Oil, so I had a fairly heavy as well as big, bag of things.

Anyway, this brings up again, whether I need to get a car. No Luigi again today... been a few weeks now, and since he has been our main 'ride' giver, there is certainly a need for another car here. So few have cars that are able to ferry 'us' around and although the buses and trains work well most of the time, there are just occasions when a car is really necessary. The challenge for me is 1) I would need to get an Italian license, 2) Insurance is very very expensive, 3) parking is a huge challenge 4) cars are often stolen when left on the street 5)what if I don't get renewed to stay here and then I'd have a car to have to sell.  Other than that, I would Love to have a car!  Anyway, I will have to give this some more serious thinking... ponder, ponder, ponder. For now, I'll go to the US, and figure it out when I return.

Monday, November 2nd
Great rest last night and up today and feeling great until about noon. Then I noticed my throat was feeling funny and now at bedtime, it is feeling very strange. I am out of supertonic, or I for sure would knock some back about now!

Washed the sheets as it was a nice sunny day for drying, took a brief walk, but worked most of my day on my October blog, but decided not to post it until after the Caputo baby is born. Still waiting. However, just after 10:30pm, got a note from her that her water had broken.  But the baby was still very high and not ready to come just yet!

Today, I sat at the computer too long, so have a little space heater here which I turned on for a little heat for my feet and legs, however, when I turned on the washing machine at the same time, I tripped the main breaker. Not just the one in my apartment, but had to go downstairs in the utility room and sure enough, it had tripped.  Which reminds me. The oven light was not working when I moved in, so I'm thinking it just needs changed, however, when I was working under the sink I noticed that it was actually unplugged, so I plugged it in.  Well, that didn't go so well.... it kept tripping the main breaker, so one more thing to get fixed.... never seems to end ☺

I made yummy shrimp Fajita's for dinner! They don't have sour cream here, so I use Greek Yogurt as a substitute and it really doesn't taste that much different. Also, had some fruit that needed to be used up, so juiced the oranges, the pomegranates, the tomatoes and drank them all! Not together, but throughout the day.

Tuesday, November 3rd
Still no baby.  All day Cristina and I chatting back and forth... me offering to bring her some Castor Oil  ☺ hee hee.

Other than waiting for the baby to arrive, I didn't do much today, except computer work, month end stuff. Then about 9pm they headed for the hospital. At 11:30pm, still no baby. I went to bed shortly after that...

Wednesday, November 4th
and at 2:42am I received the great news from Marco, "È nato Davide!" and at 5:19am Cristina sent me these photos

Isn't he adorable!!! A beautiful baby! Davide, 3.65kg, 50cm, born at 1:54am 11/04/15. Some of the happiest days are when babies are born. After this, I couldn't go back to sleep, so up and about now. Cristina will be in hospital for about 3 days. Can't wait to see this littlest miracle! Tim and Tula, Cristina's parents, arriving on Saturday was just the perfect timing!

So with this, I will post the October blog. Just knew I couldn't leave everyone hanging wondering about whether Cristina had her baby yet. ♥

A month of Joy and Sorrow interwoven for this beautiful family. Very special to be a part of their lives.

Arrivederci
